Beginner List (Age 6-8+)

If your reader loves a quiet story filled with sweetness and quirky animal characters, Sophie Mouse: A New Friend and Heartwood Hotel: A True Home will make their hearts so happy.

If you’ve got an early reader who is looking for hilarity, check out the antics of Frank and Beans in Mad About Meatloaf or the crazy shenanigans happening on Deckawoo Drive in Kate DiCamillo’s Francine Poulet Meets the Ghost Raccoon.

If your reader is thirsty for adventure, Wildsmith and Llama Quest: Danger in the Dragons’ Den fit the bill.  Each title is the first in a series - so even though they’re short, they’re many!

Middle Reader (Age 8-12)

If you're looking for adventure with a touch of fantasy, try R.J. Palacio’s Pony, The Wingfeather Saga or How to Train Your Dragon. Yes, How to Train Your Dragon has been around for a while but with the new movie coming out, this is the perfect time to read or reread.

If you love anything magic, look no further than Chronicles of Whetherwhy: The Age of Enchantment. The best magic school since Hogwarts.

If you love novels about real life with a touch of mystery, Cornelia Funke’s new novel The Green Kingdom is where you should start.

If you like to laugh out loud but you’re sick of Dogman and Captain Underpants, try The 13-Story Treehouse - an oldie but a goodie!

Graphic Novels (Age 8+)

If you’re all about the witchy, try Hooky Vol. 1 (and then volumes 2 & 3) about boy/girl twins who miss the bus to magic school and have to find a mentor - fast!

If you love an epic adventure quest, Amulet: The Stonekeeper is the one for you. A brother/sister duo goes through a magical door in their haunted house to try to rescue their mother.

If you love to LOL, don’t miss Phoebe and her Unicorn (in which young Phoebe is granted one wish, and she wishes for the unicorn to be her bestie) and Sparks! (wherein two cats power a mechanical dog suit and masquerade as a canine superhero).

If you love real life drama, with lessons about life and friendship, try El Deafo or The Cartoonists Club.

Young Adult (Age 12+)

If you love a rom-com, Tia William’s YA debut Audre and Bash are Just Friends is the one for you. Character-drama? Real life situations and the struggles of growing up? That’s Darius the Great is Not Okay.

If you’re drawn to epic high fantasy, Windswept will have you reading deep into the night. Code Name Verity is excellent historical fiction about two young female fighter pilots during WWII.

Heartless Hunter is a fantasy and romance combo about a witch with a plan to secretly get close to a famous witch hunter - but she doesn’t expect to fall for him. If you loved 2023’s Divine Rivals, try The Otherwhere Post. A girl is thrown into poverty and shame because of her father’s crimes, but a mysterious letter shows up: Your father was innocent.

Happy Reading!!! And H.A.G.S.
